EO beginner, mental health/migraine blends

hello! i'm just starting to get into oils for aromatherapy. I have used them in cleaning for the past couple of years but have never been brave enough to move onto putting them on my skin, though i've been tempted with making bug sprays a time or two in the summer months. I currently suffer from anxiety and panic disorder, i take zoloft for it (no plans on getting myself off it and going totally holistic, sorry!) but mainly i'm very concerned about some of the things i've read regarding the affects of certain eos on serotonin levels. I really don't want to do something that will be detrimental to my health (obviously) and i'm very worried about the possibility for serotonin syndrome or some other terrible thing i'm not aware of. so i guess what i'm trying to say is how realistic is my fear of using a calming blend or making my own blend and messing up my body's chemistry? i've found a couple recipes online that sound nice but i'm kind of scared to mix them up and give them a shot. i also am prone to migraines and would love a good migraine blend, again i've found some online but i'm freaked out. i have a healthy (or maybe unhealthy?) fear of just about everything when it comes to medicine or homeopathic anything as i have no clue what i'm doing. i've done a bit of reading but i would really love to hear from experienced people or from other folks who may be in the same boat. i guess i just want to proceed with caution.

It has long been claimed by aromatherapists that essential oils can positively affect mood, and scientific studies are now providing significant evidence for such effects, as well as explanations of how they work. Inhalation (diffuser use) is a very efficient mode of administration for affecting neurological function, as the smell receptor sites in our nasal cavity have a direct link to the brain, via the olfactory bulbs.

To boost serotonin and ease depression/ anxiety, use a mixture bergamot, lavender, orange and lemon slowly vaporized throughout the day as required.

For Harmony use Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), sandalwood (Santalum album), ylang ylang (Cananga odorata), frankincense (Boswellia carteri), orange (Citrus aurantium), angelica (Angelica archangelica), geranium (Pelargonium graveolens), hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis), spruce (Picea mariana), Spanish sage (Salvia lavandulifolia), rosewood (Aniba rosaeodora), lemon (Citrus limon), jasmine (Jasminum officinale), Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile), bergamot (Citrus bergamia), palmarosa (Cymbopogon martinii), and rose (Rosa damascena).

You can purchse EO as single bottles however the use of a blend might be less expensive and not as time consuming to formulate.

Hi sarbarbearah,

There are multiple reasons as to why headaches occur, maybe you've had a bit too much to drink the night before and your brain is dehydrated from all that alcohol consumption. Other reasons could be lack of sleep or constant exposure to sunlight (without head protection) or staring at a computer screen for too long.
Simple solutions would include drinking a healthy amount of water as mentioned by previous authors, wearing protective head gear during hot summer days, getting at least 7 hours of sleep and finally taking breaks when using your computer.

Essential oils that have been used to relieve headaches include Eucalyptus Globulus, Citronella, Lavender, Lemongrass, Sweet Marjoram and Peppermint.

Powerful recipes include mixing lavender (8 drops), roman chamomile (4 drops) and apricot kernel (1 oz). Mix the oils together and take 1-4 drops of mixture place upon fingers and massage against forehead, temple and back of the neck.

To relieve stress, the most popular oils include lavender, peppermint, clary sage, bergamot, frankincense, ylang ylang, hyssop, geranium and roman chamomile.

Effective combinations would include taking 2 drops of rosemary and 3 drops of lavender and applying it onto a handkerchief or napkin and inhaling the essential oils whenever you feel stressed.

Another recipe for relieving stress would be mixing 4 drops of bergamot, 4 drops of clary sage and 2 drops of frankincense and mixing it all with either jojoba or avocado base oil. Take the mixture and massage over body.

Please remember to not take the essential oils internally unless specified by your physician/doctor.
